The ability of utilities to earn a return of and on investment is fundamental. We represent the MISO Transmission Owners both at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and before the D.C. Circuit. Our work involves defending orders that uphold the right of transmission owners to provide the capital investment for network upgrades required to interconnect generation facilities (known as the “self-fund option”). 

The self-fund option allows transmission owners to provide the initial funding for network upgrades that would not be needed “but for” the generators interconnecting their facilities. The self-fund option also allows transmission owners to recover the initial investment and earn a return on it over the service lives of the network upgrades, similar to how they recover the costs of other components of the grid they own.
